Families are rarely straightforward.
For many children, family life can include birth parents, foster carers, adoptive families, grandparents, siblings living in different homes, step-parents, shared care arrangements and family members they see only occasionally. Alongside this, some children are trying to make sense of bereavement, changing family relationships, or why brothers and sisters remain living with birth family when they cannot. For parents and carers, these situations can feel incredibly difficult to navigate. Some worry about saying the wrong thing. Others struggle to know how honest to be when children ask difficult questions. Many feel caught between protecting a child's emotional wellbeing whilst supporting important family relationships. Over time, these situations can leave parents and carers feeling uncertain, emotionally drained and unsure how best to respond.
The truth is:
Supporting children through complex family dynamics means helping them understand their story, process difficult emotions and feel secure in the relationships around them while giving them permission to love, miss and talk about the important people in their lives without fear or guilt.

In this Deep Dive, we'll explore practical, trauma-informed ways to support children through some of the most emotionally challenging family situations they may experience.
